Selecting artists from music library takes over a minute

  • I have a relatively recent T3CH build of XBMC (xbmc.log says "Built on Apr 6 2008").
    I have a music library shared over samba with about 200 artists, 500 albums, and 8000 songs. In music settings "Fetch album information on scan" and "Fetch artist information on scan" were both on when I scanned my library.

    Now my problem is that when I view my music in library mode, if I click on "artists" it takes over a minute to list the artists with a lot of hard drive thrashing on the xbox. The other menu items (albums and songs) work as quickly as I would expect:
    Artists: 1:13
    Albums: 0:01
    Songs: 0:07
    These times are about the same regardless of whether the setting "enable tag reading" is enabled or not under music settings.

    At first I had the suspicion that it was loading the album artwork that was taking so long, but if that was the case wouldn't choosing the menu item albums take a long time too?

    Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
