Bocanegra for Newcastle, Part Deux

January 6th, 2009
  • Well, part one was in another forum a while ago and I couldn't find it.

After last night's showing matching up very well against Brazil and scoring the lone US goal, Carlos Bocanegra once again proved to me that he would be an improvement in central defense and could join Woodgate in the back.

Earlier this year, the rumor was that sides were going to wait until the MLS season ended, when Boca would be available on a free.

I say don't wait; pay MLS and sign him for now.

The word around the Toon (and it's usually right) is that Freddy is tieing up a deal with the LA Lakers. It is thought to be similar to the deal between Man U and the NY Yankees. If so this will mean a massive increase in exposure in America for Newcastle.

    The Lakers?!

Being a Philly fan, I may have to rethink my allegiance to Newcastle if this is true. I F'ing hate the Lakers.

    Thx,

  • Realistically, with his contract about to end and the MLS season halfway over, it wouldn't cost too much to get Bocanegra now.

Toon can basically say to the league, will you X (say 500K) now for him or we'll wait till December and you'll get nothing - take it or leave it.

MLS will likley see the writing on the wall and figure anything they get for him now is better than nothing and, after trying to milk some more money out of the deal, let him go for, in international soccer standards, fairly cheap.

  • DYER IS NOT GOING. If he was Fergie would have made it public knowledge that he wanted him. That's the way he works. He knows that Man U are the biggest club in the country if not the world and he uses that to try and attract players. If he really wanted him it would have been all over the papers. So far all we have are "newcastle sources" which means a rumour. The only people who know is coming or going at Newcastle are Bobby and the board and non of them would talk to the papers about future transfers. I'll hear nothing more on this rubbish!

  • According to Sky Sports News. Freddy is in Los Angles rapping up a "Major Deal". Normally i would take all this with a pintch of salt but the Toon's continued link to Bocangera makes me think that we could be about to sign him.

Also we will play Parmisan Belgrade or Swedish Champs Djurgardens. West Ham drew 0-0 with them last night. Rob Lee has signed for them.

  • i'd like it to be boca to nufc that freddy is wrapping up. but i think it really is dyer to manu.

fergie likes dyer, nufc can do with the 20 - 25 million, and jenas et al can be used to fill the need.

  • Boca's agent is based out of LA, and I wouldn't be surprised if Garber were there right now. I have no idea whether it is in fact Bocanegra, but if NUFC wait until he's available on a free then they'll definitely have competition for his signature. This will drive his wages up, possibly higher than a nominal transfer fee. Also there's a possibility of losing out on him entirely. MLS is very good at cranking up the deal just before the current contract ends, so if NUFC wants Boca, now is definitely the time to go after him, not when he's a free agent.

That said, what about the guy (Argentinean?) that wanted to buy Chelsea then Aston Villa? Perhaps he has a toon target?

  • Getting Bocanegra would be a great addition to the backline seeing that that area needs work. If I was NUFC, I'd also wait for the MLS season to end to sign him for free so as to save money & if he turns out to be an awesome player, then it's a shrewd business move. But being a MLS supporter, we could use some funds. Oh the dilemna. Hopefully he'll find a lot of first-team action and not be wasted away.

  • Since this was reported as a "major deal", I just don't see Bocanegra falling into that category nor any other US or Mexican player. The fact that Man U happens to be in LA at the same time is too coincidental for me. Also, I am not positive, but I seem to recall that (while not this transfer season) Sir Alex did at one point express interest in obtaining the services of Dyer. So, rubbish or not, I think this is all about Dyer....UNLESS Juergen Klinsmann is planning on coming out of retirement (he lives in the LA area):)

Bocanegra plays for Chicago Fire but if FF cuts the deal in LA, that's great, too!

Rob Lee has signed with West Ham?

If Fat Freddie sells Dyer to ManUre, he might as well not come back to Tyneside.

  • It looks more and more likely because today Freddy has said that it is purely commecial reasons that he is in LA. Not following Basketball I have no idea about what people think off them, but i get the impression that they are the Man U of basketball.

  • I'd root for the Clippers sometimes, believe it or not!

  • Both Newcastle and Man U have said that it is purely coincidence that both clubs have their top officals in the same place at the same time. However all things seem to point to us signing a player from the MLS it may not be Bocanegra. Another reason for Freddy's vist could be an attempt to increase his collection of clubs to add to his ones in Australia, Hong Kong and half of Dalian Shide in China.
Of course it could just be a big cover story so Freddy and Dougie can sample some of the high-class prostitues LA has to offer.

Isn't Boca from LA? Is his agent based out of there?
