Nikon d80 or Canon 400d

March 19th, 2010
  • Please suggest which of the two should i buy?
Which is the better camera when it comes to getting less noise in images ?

  • The feel will change per person, so go to the store and pick the one that feels best in your hands.

  • Of those two cameras, side-by-side, discounting everything else, I'd say the Nikon is the better of the two. But it's not as simple as that.

Bottom line is either will serve you well and which ever 'feels' right to you after you have handled then both in a store is the one to get.

Edit: I'd just like to say that I have a Canon, but if I was to choose between just those two cameras I'd choose the D80.

  • I wouldn't be surprised if in the next couple years, Nikon will come out with a similar sensor cleaning system - so I wouldn't solely base my choice on that. As people have said - test them out, think before you buy, and go for it. You can't go wrong with Canon or Nikon.

(I should probably note that my first statement wasn't because I am a Nikon user - I shoot Canon :))

  • it is all opionion in the equipment advice and reviews, i started a thed for peopel to debat wich brand they like better, but personaly i would go for the d80 if nothing else it has one of the best magazine adds ever

    wrong,
you started a thread where you wanted to compare whole BRANDS, and not two specific cameras. So that is of no use here.

  • For specifics on cameras, visit www.dpreview.com. They have some really in-depth reviews on tons of cameras.

  • @ alex b : so u saying cleaning system doesnt matter much.

I am saying for me personally it would not be the main ingredient in decision making.

If there were two cameras very similar and both would fit my needs perfectly, then I would go for the camera with sensor cleaning.

But then again I myself do not have automatic sensor cleaning, so we should myabe wait for someone to answer who used that cleaning alot already.

  • i'd go with the D80 because it feels better. That's what you should be buying these on. How they feel and if the button layout makes sense to you. The noise difference is practicly unnoticeable in a print.

  • I was looking at both too although my financial situation is far from affording either.

The D80 does feel better, but in terms of price vs performance and features, most people prefer the Canon. I don't know. I have a set of Nikon non-AF lens so I don't know if sticking to Nikon(D80) helps.

  • No, but you can get one for $20 bucks or around there.

  • IMHO D80 is a better choice, you feel Pro when you hold it. :D

  • I didn't even know such a thing existed. Sounds like a nice feature.

  • IMPORTANT: Does the Canon XTi's kit lens come with a lens hood? I need to know by 12:00 tonight (4 hours).

  • Go try them out both and buy which one you like the best... no point in buying what someone else likes.

    Buy Nikon!

  • I have a 400d and was considering both. What swung it was simply that I was used to Canon's menus/functions, the fact that no Canon products I have owned ever went wrong, that the Canon was some £200 cheaper and that it had a dust removal system. I since then found that Canon second hand lenses were cheaper and more aboundant than Nikon. The only plus for the Nikon (apart from size and feel) is spot metering but partial metering goes some way towards helping.

  • ya u r right dewey, and thanks everybody.
the two things that are stopping me from buying nikon is that it does not have dust cleaning system and is 200 $ expensive than canon.
I spent a hell lot of more money on my camera, and it doesn't even have a sensor cleaning system ... still I am happy :)

the 200 $ certainly are a factor, but sensor cleaning is not IMHO. Especially after I talkd to Canon people and the admitted that it does not help with "sticky" dust (anything which is not 100% dry I guess), like pollen and the like.

Even if you have sensor cleaning, you will eventually have to clean the sensor by hand (don't take "hand" literally here ;)), depending on the conditions you shoot in and change your lenses in.

It is very nice. The 400D not only vibrates the mirror to shake off the dust, it also has what is called a dust mapping feature, where if there is any dust on the mirror that it did not remove, if you take a picture of say, a white wall, and it detects some, it will automatically be removed from the pictures you take.
