  • The place in Northumberland, England, given as the place from which GEORGE FENWICK came in THE TOPOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY OF ENGLISH EMIGRANTS TO NEW ENGLAND 1620-1650, C.E.BANKS, 3rd Edition

  • Dear burge, I have found Colonel George Fenwicks place of origin in Northumberland; however, I got this information from other sources than the book you mentioned. Would you nevertheless like to get the result of my research as an answer? Regards, Scriptor

  • Dear burge, After careful consideration, I have decided to give you the information I found as an answer. It is, as I already mentioned, derived from sources other than the "Topographical Dictionary of English Emigrants" you mentioned; but since the odds are not very good that any of my colleagues has access to such a specialized work, I believe and hope that my sources will also meet your needs. George Fenwick was born in 1603 in Brinkburn, Northumberland, England. This information comes from a biography of Col. George Fenwick (1603 - 15 March 1656) that also mentions his role in Saybrook, Connecticut, in the second half of the 1630s: Morpeth Today: The Morpeth MP who beacame a Governor of Berwick http://www.morpethtoday.co.uk/Custom_Pages/CustomPage.asp?Page=45 Brinkburn as George Fenwick's place of birth has also been confirmed by two entries in the International Genealogical Index of the Latter Day Saints' genealogy database, FamilySearch: The first entry indicates that George Fenwick, son of George Fenwick and Dorothy Forster was born in 1603 in "Brinckburne", England. The second entry indicates that George Fenwick, son of George Fenwick and Dorothy Forster was born in 1603 in "Brinkborne", England. Considering the fact that in the 17th century the spelling of place names was still far from being standardized, there can be no doubt that this is the George Fenwick you are searching for. This is substantiated by data from a second genealogy database, RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi It has two entries of one George Fenwick who was born in 1603 and died in about 1656, with no place of birth mentioned, but with the names of his parents: George Fenwick and Dorothy Forster. Regarding the life dates and the names of his wives (Alice Apsley, Catherine Haselrige) that comply with the biography from Morpeth Today, it is obvious that this is the correct George Fenwick. In case you would like to know the source for the FamilySearch data, you can request information on the origin of the first entry using these file registration numbers: Batch Number: 5016977 Sheet: 12 Source Call No.: 1553685 For a request, please refer to: Family History Library 35 North West Temple Street Salt Lake City, Utah, 84150-3400 Phone: 801-240-2331 Fax: 801-240-5551 E-Mail: help@productsupport.familysearch.org Website: http://www.www.familysearch.org/ Search terms used: "GEORGE FENWICK " Connecticut Northumberland ://www.google.de/search?hl=de&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&newwindow=1&q=%22GEORGE+FENWICK+%22+Connecticut++Northumberland&btnG=Google+Suche&meta= I hope this answers your question, though I could not refer back to the "Topographical Dictionary of English Emigrants" as my source of information. Best regards, Scriptor
