My betta fish always sits at the bottom..?

March 11th, 2010
  • My betta fish always sits at the bottom.. And when he goes up he just touches the surface of the water and not drink it. One fin near his head his torn apart a little.. So he can not swim that well i think.. Why is he sitting around and doing nothing? I just got him yesterday.. And the tank is 1/2 US Gallons. I bought it from petcetera.

  • your tank is too small 2.5 gallons minimum

get a heater they are tropical and sit at the bottom when they are cold
get a filter to help with the waste

  • Well you mentioned the torn fin so that might be why. Also, you said you just got him yesterday? Usually it takes a few days for your new fish to get used to his home. Does he still eat though?
Even he still acts like this for a week, i would recommend going back to the pet store you purchased your betta from and tell them u got a sick betta or something. Maybe they can do something about it :)

  • it takes about 10 days for a newly aquired fish to get used to it's new home
however, your tank is way to small for it
you need at the bare minimum a 5 us gallon tank with a filter and a heater for it to be comfortable and live a happy and long life
