Why is called American football so, if not using the foot?

  • It's derrived from rugby, which in turn is derrived from soccer, or as they call it in England, football. Even though it's mostly a throwing and running sport, the foot is still used a lot. The foot scores the extra point almost always used after a touchdown, and it also scores field goals. The foot also is used to punt the ball on 4th down (if too far away to attempt a field goal) and for the kickoff at the beginning and after the touchdown, field goal, and safety.
