I purchased a home this year in the high desert area of southern california. My peach tree has now lost all of its leaves and I'm not sure when or how to prune it. Also I have many rose bushes as well as shrubs. Should I prune now? and they all look pretty wild right now. Would it hurt to prune everything WAY back?? Thanks for your help!i have found it better to leave the trees and bushes untill after the frost..each branch and each leaf on or near the plant helps to keep it warm in winter..i bury all my plants outside in leaves to keep them fed and warm...not real attractive and ya you get some bugs also keeping warm in the pile ..but come spring you have a head start on healthy plants..i live in sac califIf you get any freezing weather where you live, it's best to wait until spring to do your pruning. Don't prune anything WAY back. That'll give your plants an unnecessary setback. On the roses, don't cut more than 1/3 of a cane off unless it's crossing another cane or completely dead. For trees and shrubs, just prune any dead wood that doesn't produce leaves in the spring. Prune roses in winter then hit them with a mix of slow and quick release fertiliser and water it in well. Be careful not to put the fertiliser too close to the plant as it will burn.#If you have any other info about this subject , Please add it free.# |
