Help! I need help finding birth and other records from 1800s?

March 12th, 2010
  • A couple months ago I found a gravestone in a creek by my house. It was for a baby named Ellie. I have been researching ever since trying to find something on her.
Whoever Ellie's father is, her mother was not married to him.
That makes me think Ellie might possibly have a different last name.

All I can find is her family. They came to the US in around 1866-1868. Ellie was born in either 1886 and died in 1888.
    They lived in Erie, PA
    Mother was Ellen (Nellie) Kane

Can anyone help me!? I have looked everywhere online and the library and without her last name I can't find anything! Please let me know!

  • CITY OF ERIE VITAL RECORDS AVAILABLE FOR RESEARCH
There are five volumes of the death records and six volumes of indices dating back from July 5, 1875 to January 24, 1908. Typical information found for each entry is: name, color, sex, age, marital status, occupation, date of death, cause of death, place of birth, ward number, street address, time of residence, name of physician, place of intended interment, date of intended interment, date of certificate, and name of undertaker

Tthese records can not be viewed by the general public. The records can be searched by the Erie County Historical Society and by the Erie Society for Genealogical Research and the information abstracted for individuals. ESGR's cost to search these records is $12.50

  • Presumably, the baby will have the same name as the mother, whether or not the mother was married to the father?

The above family fits what you state about when they came to the US, and is in the 1880 census.
What is your source for saying the baby was born out of wedlock?
PA did not require birth/death certificates until 1906, so none will exist for a child born in 1886. And, she was born after 1880 census (which is taken every 10 yrs, 1890 lost to a fire).
I ran the surname and Erie through rootsweb's files, and found nothing. What I do not have is ancestry.com, which should show some of them in 1900, or later, depending on if they remained.
The best place is the courthouse there in Erie, which will possibly have a marriage record for Ellen, or any family; land records to determine where THIS family lived. You might also want to trace your land back. If others in the family died in the area.. the cemeteries for the county will not necessarily be online.
It can get complicated.. but in some cases, you may be able to locate where this family lived... and compare that to your location.
IF you can find a marriage for Ellen.. then it may be possible to track her or family in later census records. Doing this MIGHT help find possible living family members, who may know the story or where the stone comes from.
    http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~paerie...
the county genweb page.. click to cemeteries, scroll down and there is a cemetery association.. but note, some are surveyed, some are not. Get in touch with them.
Your best bet is family members, and possibly local records. If you can locate a marriage.. someone here will probably do a look up in ancestry for 1900 for you.
Feel free to send me a message through my profile, and let me know progress. It may take digging and several posts, but you might be able to track down more.

  • check your local morman church the LDS. they have a large amount of genealogy information. hope this helps.
