I'm on the hunt for a good camera! Easy Best Answer if you already own one?

March 22nd, 2010
  • I would like it to be at least 10 Megapixels and have 5X zoom. I don't really know the difference between optical and digital zoom, so somebody's going to have to explain that to me. Also, I'm on a budget of like, 180$, but I can go as high as 200. Although, my mom is like, "Oh, 180? That's so expensive! I've seen cheaper!" Apparently she's seen these oh-so-cheap and great cameras on the shopping network, but then it gets too late and we miss our chance. Always.

Anyway, does anybody have any recommendations?

I've bought mine last week and it's great.

  • You definitely want optical zoom. Avoid digital zoom. Optical zoom essentially does what binoculars or a telescope do. They show the image larger and more detailed. Digital zoom is basically the same effect as cropping a photo to make the subject look bigger, but you're cropping out a lot of pixels, and therefore, losing image quality. An image with optical zoom will still have 10 megapixels, while an image with digital zoom will have fewer pixels and poorer image quality.

As far as cameras in that price range, there are numerous ones to choose from. Go with a reputable brand (ie. don't get anything that says Coby) such as Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc.
